Michael A. Leavitt said after the twister had gone, ''If you stand where we are right now in the calm of an August afternoon, it's almost inconceivable what happened.''
The tornado, which was rated a relatively low F-2 on the Fujita Scale of tornado severity, touched down southwest of the city just before 1 P.M. and took direct aim at the city's central district. It moved northeast toward the Capitol. While the Capitol was not damaged, other buildings were, including the Delta Center, which is home to the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association, and the Wyndham Hotel, where windows were blown out and guests were evacuated. It also blew off roofs throughout the city, uprooted trees, caused numerous gas leaks and power failures, disrupted phone service and left debris everywhere in its wake. By this evening, calm had returned, but downtown remained a patchwork of flashing lights from emergency vehicles, wailing sirens and blinking traffic lights. The authorities closed off many downtown streets to keep people from interfering with cleanup efforts.Scott Collins, a deputy with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department, said many of the injured were within a five-square-block area that included many of the city's largest hotels.
The Salt Lake City police identified the dead man as Allen Crandey of Las Vegas, Nev., who died after a steel beam fell on him. The police said that many were treated at the scene for and that 70 people were treated at hospitals. As many as 15 of those were in serious condition, the police said. Many downtown hotels were filled with visitors attending a convention of outdoor sports retailers. When the tornado hit, hundreds of the conventioneers were caught in two large outdoor tents, where vendors were exhibiting their goods. Mr. Crandey, who was helping set up booths for the convention, was killed near the tents.''It was lunch hour,'' said Sgt. Kenneth Hansen, a spokesman for the police department. ''It's just a miracle more people weren't killed and injured.''Sergeant Hansen said the trade show, the Outdoor Retailers' convention, which was expected to attract 25,000, was scheduled to open on Thursday. The damaged tent in the parking lot behind the Salt Palace Convention Center would have been crowded with conventioneers.
''That would have been a disaster,'' Sergeant Hansen said. Officers with trained dogs were sent to the site of the collapsed tent to see whether workers setting up booths were trapped in the debris. The police also said that 121 houses had been damaged and that 34 could no longer be lived in.Salt Lake City last had a tornado in 1968, said Capt. William C. Brass, a spokesman for the Salt Lake County Fire Department.home decor liquidators in richmond va Tornadoes are rare in Utah, which had 32 in 25 years, said Tim Shy, a researcher at the University of Illinois. tj maxx home goods roseville caThat compared with 1,326 for the same period in Oklahoma.Larry E. Burch, lead forecaster with the Salt Lake City office of the National Weather Service, said the tornado was detected about 12:45 P.M., but the service's radar, about 40 miles from downtown, indicated only a severe thunderstorm.rustic home decor airdrie
At 12:48 P.M., the weather service issued a warning of ''damaging'' winds in excess of 60 m.p.h. and hail of up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter. ''It showed no tornadic signature,'' meaning rapid changes in wind velocity, Mr. Burch said. The weather service estimated that the tornado left a ''damage track'' as wide as a half-mile and as long as two miles. It touched ground for at least five minutes, he said.Captain Brass summed it up this way: ''This caught us by surprise. tj maxx home goods centennialWe get dust devils, and it gets a little windy; tj maxx home goods centennial coloradoBut this was no dust devil.''at home the home decor superstore corpus christi
Tom Grazulis, a tornado expert who charted every major American tornado over the last 200 years in a book, ''Significant Tornadoes,'' said today's was the first in Utah to cause a death and just the sixth in the state that caused injuries but the fifth to cause injuries in the 1990's.Mr. Grazulis declined to speculate whether the trend reflected atmospheric changes or recent population increases in Utah, which is one of the fastest-growing states in the country.''That's very difficult to determine,'' he said from St. Johnsbury, Vt., reflecting a common frustration among scientists who study weather patterns. With more people populating an area, he said, even minor storms can cause greater damage.Despite the tornado's relative timidity, people here might not soon forget what they saw.John Sears, a hotel manager, said: ''It was humongous. This circular cloud was right on the ground, and I could see big chunks of metal that were folding like cardboard.''POSITIVE NEWS ABOUT OUR PACKAGING Wood Positive is about doing even more: going beyond the standard practices to make a real, positive difference.
